once upon a time there was a King who was really sorta off his rocker and he had triplets and one of them was evidently cursed or whatever.

But their dad was crazy and progressive or something and didn't believe in curses so he gave all three boys the same mark so they would never know which one was the cursed son cause that sure isn't going to ever bite them all in the ass someday.

Hal grows up with the impression that he is the 'useless brother' because he's not psychotic and thus not bizarrely gifted in things like his brothers so he makes up for that by working hard every day to become better at things.

everything's fine until daddy gets killed by FUCKING GARRY and wow shit looks like one of us is going to have to pretend to be King for a few years until we're all old enough to take the throne legally otherwise FUCKING GARRY gets to be King.

so of course Hal being desperate to prove himself/prove that he's NOT THE CURSED ONE volunteers to act as King (he even has Mao break his legs so he can be taller that's important what good boys.)

fast forwards through a few years of unhealthy codependent we-can-only-trust-each-other-except-for-Kait bullshit and Lycoris enters the scene and Hal is immediately a dick to her because 1: he's grown up to be a paranoid cynical piece of shit and 2: tbf Lycoris DID try to kill him, so... moving on.

after weeks of torturing Lycoris and treating her like absolute garbage he suddenly decides he likes her because she also struggled when people thought she was good for nothing etc WOW LOVE only he was a dick so that never pans out for him.

and then FUCKING GARRY decides to be a dick again (actually he never stops being a dick he just flies into major ultra dick mode) and basically fuck up everything and everything goes to hell and Lycoris is dying and Hal has to convince every King in the realm that he is his dad otherwise they're all fucked and WOW WHEN DID EVERYTHING GO WRONG???

oh right everything went wrong the moment Mao existed. Turns out Mao is psychotic, Kait is psychotic but Getting Better, and Hal unknowingly became Mao's crutch and somehow that just lead to everything going up in flames and that's why you shouldn't fall in yanlove with your brother kiddies.

so in the end rocks fall and everyone dies except for Hal who is left alone to rebuild their Kingdom with the fortune Mao left him cause Mao was like some kind of yanincestdragon hoarding gold and shit THE END.

So basically this guy is a dipshit with issues but not quite as many issues as his brothers but somehow that doesn't make his life any better. And since he's coming straight from the end of his canon where literally everyone he loves dies and his Kingdom is destroyed I'm sure he has twice the issues now along with a bonus heaping helping of guilt because no one ever told him he wasn't the cursed child that would bring about the end of the Kingdom. Or maybe he was. Or maybe he just really needs to break up with his brothers and develop real, healthy relationships that aren't built on paranoia and codependency.

This may sound like a simple task, but since Hal grew up surrounded by yanbrothers and people who wanted to kill him he hasn't exactly had much opportunity to form healthy relationships. And even if he has the opportunity he's been conditioned to trust virtually no one but his psychotic brothers. And even if he does grow to trust anyone he still has the capability of ruining everything by being a gigantic asshole. So yeah, making friends is a difficult task.
